About the Book

Based on an actual destruction of a school with the children and teachers inside, this fictional story portrays the tragedy while lightening it by the survival of four children between 9 and 13 years. Their ordeal is long and arduous but with courage and ingenuity and even humor they triumph over many dangerous challenges: sheltering from the mudslide they become imprisoned in an abandoned mine, they fall into a deep well, swim underwater to an underground tunnel only to reach a locked basement of a ruined monastery.

They are helped by mysterious and eerie agencies that terrify until they benefit from them. There is parallel action as the Welsh villagers try to rescue their children. When all hope is gone, the four children emerge to interrupt the memorial service by their disheveled but welcome appearance. A greater power than theirs had brought them to safety.

About the Author

Born and educated in Wales, UK, the author taught primary and secondary grades in Sheffield, England and in Philadelphia, PA USA where she became a principal before leaving to be married and teach in New York State.

She began writing stories to entertain her young son and daughter and published articles on educational and religious topics.

After an early retirement from teaching, she entered Eastern Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia and became an ordained Methodist minister, serving churches in the Pennsylvania cities of Philadelphia, and Catasauque, PA. Dragon Mountain, her first novel for children (9-13 yrs) was inspired by the tragic deaths of 144 children and teachers when the Aberfan School was buried by a rain soaked tip of coal dust and slag. Her account is completely fictional written as an antidote to the terrible event. When disasters strike there must be hope that the human spirit can survive.
