"Have a seat Mr. Smith, your friend also."
About that time I saw his henchman ease back through the door. He stood over John so I walked over near John too. Mr. Diamond looked at John and asked, "Would your friend like to sit down and relax, Mr. Smith?"
"No, he can relax better standing near your hit man, and by the way, Mr. Diamond, you don’t have to talk to my cousin through me, he speaks perfect English."
"Well, Paul is just here to make sure no one comes in while we have the diamonds out."
"Well, my man Johnny is just here to help Paul watch."
"Very well, Mr. Smith, here are the diamonds you wanted. I can promise you they’re the best, so pick out what you want and I’ll give you a good price."
John looked over at me and winked his eye. I knew he meant for me to keep an eye on Paul just in case he felt a little froggy. After checking them for a few minutes John picked up two and asked how much they were.
"Seven-thousand each."
"I’ll give you ten for the two, take it or leave it."
"You drive a hard bargain, Mr. Smith, but you’ve made a deal. I’ll have Paul wrap it up for you."
"If Paul puts his hands on my diamonds, that will be his last act."
"I assure you Paul is most trustworthy."
"I don’t care if you trust Paul with your little sister, if he touches my merchandise he’s history."
"Very well, Mr. Smith, here is a sack to put your gems in."
"Don’t put them away just yet my partner’s going to take a look to see what he likes." John looked over at me, Check them out partner."
I walked over to the table and there in front of me were more diamonds than I had ever seen in my life. Ben then this was the first time I’d seen diamonds not mounted in a ring. As I looked from one to the other, this one kept catching my eye so I picked it up and asked John what he thought. He took his it in his hand then took out his little glass, held up the diamond and turned it around and around.
"It’s not the best but it’s what you want. Okay Mr. Diamond, give him a sack."
"All my diamonds are of the best quality, Mr. Smith, and I’m going to let you have that one for 6 G’s."
"Four or you can put it back with the rest."
As John said this he started for the table to get his gems and this is when Paul started to reach his hand into his pocket. Big J quickly slid his heat out of its holster and pushed it right in his side.
"That had better be pocket change you’re reaching for my friend. Bring your hand out very slowly with your fingers spread and when they’re out I want you to fold your arms and keep them folded."
"What is the meaning of this, Mr. Smith?"
"Just keeping you honest, Mr. Diamond. Now here is your 14 grand. Your guns will be over by the door. Let’s split J."
I slowly backed away from friend Paul after lifting his heat. John had already reached the door and kept his eye on them while I crossed the room.
"It's been a pleasure doing business with you gents, but we’ve really got to leave. Our train leaves in about forty minutes. I’ll call you when I want more gems, Mr. Diamond."
"Always glad to do business with men who know what they want. Maybe next time you’ll be a little more trusting."
We laid their guns down by the door as we closed it and headed for the elevator. We kept an eye behind us just to be sure. When we reached the lobby it was crowded with people, so we stopped at the desk and John gave them the key for room 903, paid him and we booked. We grabbed a cab and John gave him the name of another hotel. We arrived and went in.
"Good afternoon gentlemen, you have a room for my brother and me? My name is James Jones."
"Oh yes, Mr. Jones, here’s the key for room 315."
