I began paying more attention to the road and the fact the topography of the land had changed. I drove right into New Mexico without even realizing the sign posted at the border. I was so busy processing events along the route of my travels the miles just flew by without notice. My relationship with time had diminished. But I knew I could process things, without distraction, on the plane headed for home. A sudden sadness came over me when I passed by the eastern edge of the Navajo Reservation. The unique relationship I developed with the land and its people had now become a vivid memory for my mind to gnaw on. Thoughts of Eileen and our moments together resurfaced. I began to wonder if her mind was as busy as mine while she entertained a group of tourists in the canyon. Would she ever confide in anyone else but me about her uncanny experience? Then I realized the missed opportunity I had with her during our final hours together. I could've asked a million questions, but I didn't. But then, maybe she was as shell-shocked as I was and couldn't quite process all the things that occurred. Maybe what happened to us would have to weigh itself out over time. I considered that to be a probability. My mind flipped back to the busy highway. I realized I had passed a string of mesas, even the Continental Divide, without consciously seeing them. I had been so focused on thoughts that my body was driving the car on automatic mode.

James Stevens, a professional in the field of advertising, suffers through another steamy Midwest summer and the grueling hours of his job, only to realize he's on the edge of physical and psychological burnout. Confronting the situation, he arranges a short vacation to help reestablish some balance in his life. Involved in a rather questionable relationship at the time, Stevens' significant other gives strong opposition to his taking a solo vacation. Despite her objection, he accepts an offer from an old friend to meet at an event in the Southwest. He also arranges an overnight trek on horseback into a land that has always captivated his curious mind. Stepping away from the pressures of his job and a hectic urban environment, he responds to the forces of nature and confronts certain issues in his life. Stevens also examines the illusions of the contemporary world he helped to create through his professional endeavors. During a one-on-one tour of a remote canyon, Stevens finds his hired guide doubles as a spiritual mentor helping him to see things in a new light. Plagued by unnatural and supernatural events on their journey, he develops a strong bond with this guide. He then returns home -- life turned upside-down from his vacation experience. Back in his usual environment, Stevens soon realizes he brought home an intangible souvenir determined to change him, so he not only struggles with the unexplainable anomalies he encountered on his trip, but deals with a force that is relentlessly acting on him to alter his ways. Over the course of a few months a battle ensues in Stevens' mind between his comfort zone and the unknowns that go with the challenge of a brave new life. He winds up faced with some very tough choices in order to seek the happiness he's been longing for.
About the Author
Daniel Coleman is a writer trying to make a positive contribution to our world. As a United States Navy veteran, he has seen the perils of war and understands the merits of global peace. During his military and civilian travels, he sought out the common thread that holds mankind together and has come to understand the uniqueness of the different cultures that make up our world. Over the years, he elected to diversify his education in order get a broad-based perspective of the world we live in, then share his perceptions so that others can learn from them. As a volunteer instructor, he has taught children in the public school system, learning valuable lessons from students about the complex world we created for them, and realizing many of the reasons for the breakdown of the family. In commercial enterprise, he has been involved in numerous business and engineering projects, watching man slowly "out-tech" himself, creating the complicated and impersonal world we live in today. In the past, he has been an active member of a voluntary Emergency Response Team, even worked with law enforcement agencies helping to solve crimes using his remote viewing abilities. After visiting the "dark side" of life, he preferred to divert his energy and concentrate on positive changes to society through writing. A proponent of a clean and healthy environment for future generations of Americans, he feels we have the technological capability to balance economy and ecology, but creating that balance would require rethinking current processes and strategies presently controlled by the world's corporations. Currently, he is a member of the Living History Association and resides with his wife in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.
