About the Book

This book is created from some forty years of teaching by Dr. William James. The teaching is unique in that it reaches persons from High School ("drop outs") to people who have PH.D. Degrees. Sometimes these persons were in the same Seminar together.

The title, Life Management For Young People, does not make this book "for" young people alone, but is a "know how" for the leaders who are to lead young people.

It has been written about the experiences, over the years that have helped hundreds of young people move forward to successful endeavors in their lives. It has also taught teachers and leaders to become disciples, or students from the basic "thought provoking" lectures, discussion, and writings of Dr. James. He has demonstrated the validity in all kinds of settings such as: in church classes in New York, in College classes at the Bronx Community College, in Graduate school for Clergy at Drew Theological Seminary.

These Seminars are divided into three general sections or divisions: the first is called, "The Disciplines of Humankind". This division is to give students some background in the human history of people’s learning, and how they have applied this to life’s setting. Discipline’s real meaning is the "Study of Humankind".

The second section is called "Life Management". This is the anchor section and is given over to the "Proce4ss of Learning" that when we have the facts, the philosophies, and content of these disciplines, how we can, as individuals, in order that we may become best persons ourselves, cooperating with the best in us to help the society become its’ best.

The third section is called "The Humanizing And The Dehumanizing Factors In Our Society". This deals with how we as individuals can help to correct the negatives in our society while promoting the positives and, at the same time, knowing the difference.

About the Author

The Reverend William M. James is a United Methodist Clergyperson in New York City. The fundamental marks of his ministry have been his teaching and outreach ministry. He has been the leader and founder of many organizations in New York City. He was the Vice-Chairman of the first great Anti-Poverty Program in the country, Hayou-ACT, (Dr. Kenneth Clark was founder and prime mover) Dr. James was one of the founders of The Ministerial Interfaith Association of New York which organized the Harlem Urban Development Corporation, through the Ministerial Interfaith Association, he founded The Harlem Interfaith counseling Service, with the help of the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, and the late Dr. M.L. Wilson of Convent Avenue Baptist Church.

He acquired the name "Urban Specialist," "Mr. Urban Ministry," and "The Godfather of Harlem". In spite of all these titles Dr. James’ greatest specialty has been his "street" ministry; that is, working with young people. He, like the "Pied Piper" got them from "Greenwich Village," to "Times Square," Lexington Ave. and 125th Street, to all of the South Bronx. They came from the streets or street gangs, from the "drop outs," the homeless, also from this country, the USA, and from other countries. He got them to come to what one writer, Mr. Tracy Early called, "Rev. James’ famous seminar." He led them through the great truth of the ages. He cut these truths down from their philosophical heights so that a high school drop out could understand them. Some 3600 of these young people plus of them finished college and universities all over this county but they got their broadest education from his Seminar.

The Rev. Dr. William James received his education from Public High School in Monroe Louisiana; Mt. Beulah College in Edwards Mississippi; two college degrees from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, and his Graduate Degrees from Drew University, Madison, New Jersey.
