James Albert and Lady Charlotte were in Sir Charles’ mind and heart also. Lady Charlotte would always be for Sir Charles the woman a man dreams and prays will be close beside him at day’s end. The passing years had not diminished his passion for his wife. Too many of those years had been spent apart. His loyalty to Lord Edmund, King Edward, and whomever and whatever cause he felt God ordained had robbed him of time spent with his beloved Charlotte. James Albert, the boy he had reared like a son, lay wasting with a withered arm and it was for the boy’s benefit that this trip had been undertaken at all. "Thank God our neighbor, Lord Brigod, knew of Lady Anna and her healing powers. Lady Charlotte will be overjoyed to see her." Charles mused to himself. As the sojourners approached the castle, it became obvious to Anna that the village had spilled outside the outer bailey. Twenty to thirty thatched houses stood in orderly, geometrical patterns. Small gardens blossomed with early summer vegetables; flowers were carefully cultivated. Volunteers of purple, blue, and white violets popped their heads through the scattered strands of grass. Onions and pea flowers were plentiful. The vision was lovely, but the sounds were wrong. There were no adults’ or children’s voices calling to one another about the day’s events. Even the animals were milling about in a restrained, agitated state. Instead of a gentle hum of life, or even more to be expected, an excitement due to the Eve of June Twenty-Fourth, there seemed to be a din of shock and despair from one particular corner beyond the northeast side of the outer bailey. Sean and Charles kicked the sides of their horses and headed straight for the source of the strange noise.

Carolyn Volentine resides in Louisiana where she serves as a United Methodist minister. She lives with her husband, the Reverend Doyle Volentine. She is a graduate of Ohio University, Scarritt College, and Perkins School of Theology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, a Master of Arts Degree in Church History, Theology, and Bible and a Master of Divinity Degree. She has been a pastor to local churches for over twenty years.
