It was 4:00 A.M. We were desperate! As we sat in the car, my husband and I knew that our son had to be somewhere in the vast darkness of the surrounding mountains. A heavy, dull gloominess seemed to hang in the air, because Joel and I had no idea where Scott was. We did know that he had to be in deep trouble! "Maybe he's caught in something," my husband said thinking aloud, or he's injured, bitten by a snake, fallen into an old mine, drowned, been kidnapped--who knows what? We've got to find him!" Yes, Scott was a teenager and should have known what he was doing, but none of that made a bit of difference to us now, because he was gone, and we wanted him back! ****** Footsteps. I pricked up my ears to listen . . . finally! Their voices were barely audible. What a sight for sore eyes that kid will be! Should I kiss him or bawl him out? Or both? He must be tired and shivering--how glad he'll be to get back home. We sure never imagined all this when we left home this morning! I wondered what they'd have to say. I lowered the window. A deputy stepped up to the car with Joel beside him and calmly told me, "Mrs. Warkentin, we can't find you son anywhere." My heart suddenly plummeted to the bottom of my feet and an electric shock seemed to run through my chilled body.

About the Author
Mary Jane Warkentin attended Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, then graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois. Her Master’s Degree in Religious Education came from a seminary in Texas. She taught Bible in all elementary and high school grades, a practice no longer followed in our public schools. Now retired, she busies herself with ten volunteer ministries of various sorts. Mary Jane is the mother of five children. After one of them became lost in the mountains for six weeks, she felt impelled to write Lost, But Not Forever as an inspiration and encouragement to others.
