About the Book

Spirituality and Stuff: The Reflections of an Addictions Chaplain explores the concept of spirituality as it relates to recovery from chemical dependency and compulsive gambling. The author has assembled a lively mix of professional observations, tales of addictions, insights from the annals of Alcoholics Anonymous, and provocative questions with a theological edge. This book draws conclusions about spirituality from the author’s own experiences, from recovery literature, from Scripture, and from attention to vocabulary itself.

The author demonstrates a keen sense of irony in articles such as "The Spirit Versus the Spirits." Some of the articles in this collection are gravely serious, like "The Tractor Man," which concerns the alcoholic who will not yield. Other articles, such as "Fancy Words and Lugubrious People," are decidedly light-hearted, yet thought-provoking.

The author considers the church from the viewpoint of A.A. ("Hypocrisy and the Church") and vice-versa ("Religion Revisited"). These writings exhibit an appreciation of the A.A. program and the church, as well as a willingness to consider them critically.

While this compilation is likely to appeal to those involved in a 12-Step recovery program, it may well captivate anyone who has a broader interest in the topic of spirituality.
