A Salty Path

A bundle of joy, our playful Trixie,
You were a loving, bouncy, bright-eyed pixie.
Morning ‘til night, it was all play;
That’s how, little doggie, you spent your day.

I remember those brown searching eyes,
And how you loved to take me by surprise.
Sometimes you liked to hide from me;
I pretended not to know you were behind the tree.

I remember your whimpers as I’d go away;
You’d roll over and look cute to entice me to stay.
You’d grab a toy, run and look back
Make like a comic----shaking a sack.

You came to meet us, jumping in the air,
But the bus driver didn’t even see you there.
It was a sad way for your life to end;
I revere your memory as my childhood friend.

Sing me a song of my country
Tell of the brave and the free
Tell of the courage and toil
That made a grand home for me.

Sing me a song of ancestors
Who placed their trust in God
Tell of their tireless spirits
As they tilled the fertile sod.

Sing of those whose fervent love
Stretched from sea to sea
Willing to die for this great land
To keep America free.

Sing me a song of the beauty
Etched in hills and streams
Fragrant in exquisite flowers
Extolled in poems and dreams.

Sing me a song of the children
Whose eager outstretched hands
Bid us keep freedom alive
And protect this wondrous land.

Silvery moon, speak to me
as you softly glow
There are so many, many things
that I would like to know.

Astronauts say you’re rocks and dust
not even made of green cheese
And there was no man in the moon
when they arrived to see.

Did visitors in some ancient time
come and set foot on your shore
And did you mind our astronauts
leaving trinkets beside your door?

What will you tell the people who come
to colonize some future day
Will you say the first man came from earth
or that he evolved in some strange way?

Silvery moon, speak to me
just how much do you know
Did you see when man first came to earth
as you watched down below?
