About the Book

My military and Foreign Service involved a lot of traveling. I would often buy a book at an airport or station to read on a trip, then find that the book was boring. For the rest of those trips I'd try to think up short stories. If I had ever written them down, I'd now have hundreds, but I never wrote them and soon forgot them.

Upon retiring, in boredom, I started writing short stories and articles. Upon completing twenty-five stories, I copyrighted them and looked for publishers. First Books was the first to take them up. The subtitle of Twenty-Five for the Road is "Short Stories for Travelers." In remembrance of my traveling days, I thought that if travelers found some of the stories boring they would still have others to read on trips.

About the Author

After fourteen years in the U.S. Marines and twenty-seven years in the Foreign Service of USAID, (Agency for International Development, America's foreign aid program) I retired and, to minimize boredom, began to write short stories and articles. I also wrote a training manual, which is still in use at USAID.

During my active federal service I went to sixty-one countries, living in five of them for one to five years. I visited the other countries for two days to two months to temporarily replace someone or to work at special short-term jobs. My primary work was in logistics, such as renting office space or residences for American employees, getting customs clearances, contracting, running a warehouse and motor pool, and keeping property records.
