About the Book
Scott Chandler, an ex-U.S. Army CID officer, is a private investigator
with a clientele of European corporations. Hired to help block the hostile
take-over of an American computer company by a wealthy German, Egon von Rath,
he soon discovers that von Rath is not what he appears to be. Who exactly is
this man? How did he amass his huge fortune? Is von Rath raiding American
companies and selling their advanced technologies to the Soviet Union?
The
one person with the key to his identity is Daniel Stein, a World War Two
intelligence officer who ‘ran’ von Rath as an operative against the Russians in
postwar Germany. But even Stein never knew the whole truth about von Rath. Now,
he has a terrible score to settle with the old man and willingly joins Scott in
his attempt to unmask the German billionaire.
They
are joined in their quest by Andrea Lanz, an Austrian working for Scott – with
whom Scott has, almost unwittingly, fallen in love. In pursuit of their quarry,
the three are plunged into the murky history of the treacherous last days of
the Third Reich. It is there that they discover Nazi “werewolves,” the
notorious SS Commando Otto Skorzeny, a plot named ‘Tarnhelm’ . . . and the
birth of Egon von Rath.
Yet
even as they get closer to the truth, von Rath is closing in on them. Scott
realizes too late that no one is who they seem to be, from his old drinking
buddy, Tom Mossman, to Daniel Stein . . . possibly even Andrea. Who can he
trust? And can he discover everyone’s real identity in time to save his own
life?
About the Author
Philip Procter lived in Munich, the setting for his novel The Munich Legacy, in the early 1970’s. That’s where he met the terrorist, Carlos the Jackal, and was pursued by Neo-Nazis who thought he was a spy. "I was doing research for a series of historical articles I was writing for Mankind Magazine on Nazi Germany," Procter said. "I never realized how much trouble I could get into with a typewriter and a camera." Procter has a penchant for travel and adventure. As a kid, he grew up in Milwaukee, but moved to California where he attended UCLA. "After college I did a little bit of everything, from working in the oil fields to waiting tables to being a guinea pig for the Spacelab project. But my main interest was the theater." He joined John Houseman’s Theater Group, got his Equity card as a stage manager ("I tried acting, but I stunk.") then went on to become a theater manager and producer. He is currently the manager of Boston’s famed Wing Theater and lives with his wife, Gretchen, in a loft on Boston Harbor. "We love this crazy, old city with all of its interesting twists and turns." And Munich? "Gretchen and I still travel there, though now we like to spend our summers in Italy, in a wonderful villa nestled in the hills above Florence. Still, Munich has a certain mystery that draws us back. And there are stories about Munich still to be told."
