About the Book

This ABC: A Basic Communication Manual is an attempt to bridge the gap between the "old time" limited visual and telephonic services ("the voice with a smile/Number Please") and the modern-day mixtures of high speed, multi-faceted varieties of communication media.

To accomplish this in an understandable and meaningful manner, the reference manual is designed for application by a wide range of levels of exposure, curiosity, and experience (from pre-kindergarten to college). The entire presentation evolves from the basic of all fundamentals - the Alphabet. Expansion is then continued through unique language applications for the blind and the deaf, International Morse Code, semaphore and flashing light, all of which are alphabet-dependent.

The decimal, octal and binary numbering systems are developed to demonstrate the "positional notation" concept for each code in anticipation of showing the development into digital transmission. Up to this point, grade school students should be able to understand these basic concepts, all predicated on the standard alphabet. Some of the early chapters can be used for parental support exercises for children requiring remedial instruction and reinforcement.

Later chapters develop the spoken alphabet in "word format" from the fundamental sound wave of varying frequency vibrations, through the standard telephone "line" circuit, via the transmitter and receiver to higher levels of application, transmission media, and speed. The final chapters are devoted to demonstrating the more modern communication applications with emphasis on their basic fundamentals. For more detailed information on these ever-changing applications, more advanced reference material should be pursued at school or local public libraries and bookstores.

NOTE: having spent 6 years in naval communications (from Radioman 3rd class to Warrant Officer Radio-Electrician), 37 years in the Bell System (including 5 years as Supervisor of Training at the Long Island (NY) Plant School), District Manager in mid-town Manhattan, 10 years as a communication consultant and 20 years as an Amateur Radio "Ham", I have witnessed the tremendous evolution of the art of communications. Much of the more basic origins and applications appear now to rest in the minds and hearts of the TELCO Pioneer retirees and dyed in the wool Radio "Hams."

A gap has been created between the so-called "old-timer" who spent literally scores of years with the embryo of today’s and tomorrow’s sophisticated communication applications and the current generation of telecommunication personnel at all administrative levels. The ABC manual should hopefully also help bridge this gap.
