The purpose of this book is to discuss some of the real trials and tribulations of a job search, and more importantly explore how you "really" get a job today in these uncertain times use our experience, ideas, observations, inventories, planning, and information gathered from many other sources over the years. This information come from all over the country from many levels within various organizations. Use this book as a "tool", a workbook to build the ammunition to win the battle of getting that job. This is one of the most important battles of your life. A person used to work for one company or organization for their entire working career of about forty-five years. This is no longer true. There is little to no loyalty by companies to the workers, and the companies should expect to get none back from the employees. An employee who is will downsized, right sized, reorganize, and fire employees when times get hard or there are changes in the market, be it national or foreign, to gain a few profit points. They expect to pick up "new" qualified employees as they need them in the future with little to no regard for the employee’s economic situation or the employee’s family. This is all done in the name of saving money, re-organization, progress, or whatever the popular "buzz" word is at the time. Companies justify this in the eternal drive for more money in profits for the shareholder not to mention higher and higher bonuses for the top executives. Organizations feel if they fail to do this, someone else will. This "Darwin Capitalism" went mad! It feeds on itself to destruction! Firms feel they either make more money or go out of business. The world is becoming an even more competitive place. The world is getting smaller and companies believe that they must not only compete with business from around the corner but from around the world. Companies are cutting corners everywhere, and if you are reading and planning to use this book, you may be a "victim" of this process. This process results in higher prices and less service. Gas stations used to check your oil, wash your windows, fill your car up with gas and give you stamps. Nobody does this today and it seems that service is as "dead" as the dinosaur. Today, the indications are that companies will cut service anywhere they can to increase or protect their profits if they believe that they are in jeopardy; be it fact or fictions. Efficiency is the name of the game today. The more efficient you are, the more money the "bigger" you get. This usually comes at the expense of the employee or the customer (or both). The "Key" question for most people is how do you adjust to the "new" world of cold reality in which every one is out to get whatever they can at the expense of others. This may be a bit cynical, but it often seems true. This is the "real" world we face each day now and into the future. You must be wary these days. We know of a friend who was happily retired for nearly ten (10) years. He and his wife thought they had it made! One day one of his five children’s husband was "downsized" and guess who was back in the job market? Always keep you resume’ up-to-date. You never know what will happen next. The managers today are mainly interested in protecting their "fat" paychecks, bonuses and benefits. They do not care mainly the "new" workers who must learn to do their jobs them-selves or be fired. The managers cannot train them because they do not know the jobs. They never will know or understand the jobs.

Remember, the information is designed to help you to evaluate what you have to offer a potential employer and to assist you in presenting the information in a way that will put you in the best light.
About the Author
Dr. Gene Merhish is an educator in the areas of adult education, high school and college level studies. He has over fourteen years of teaching experience. Trained in Business Education and recognized as a Business Education Consultant for the State of California, he operated one of the most advanced programs in the teaching of retail merchandising in the Western States. In addition, Dr. Merhish has over twenty-six years of business and marketing experience with such companies as Proctor and Gamble, Gardner-Denver, Harnischfeger Corporation, Accurate Air Engineering, and is past president of an entrepreneurial corporation. Dr. Merhish has more than fifteen years of military experience with the Navy, Air Force Reserves, and National Guard. He also serves as a business and marketing teacher at Ivy University, in Alhambra, California. He has worked in consort with The China Training Center for Senior Civil Servants, Ministry of Personnel, and The People’s Republic of China. In addition, he works with small businesses as a marketing and sales consultant. Born in Des Moines Iowa, Dr. Merhish now makes his home in Southern Cali-fornia. He enjoys sunshine filled days and warm evenings. He shares his life with his wife and several animals. He continues to teach and write books, which he feels, will fill in the gaps left by today’s educational system. The subjects of meaningful employment and career options are of special interest. Not everyone needs to be a college graduate but people do need to be have options about the quality of life they will be able to support as adults.
