Exorcism is the practice of expelling demons or spirits from persons, places, or things believed either to be possessed by them or to be in danger of possession. The rite is generally performed by a priest, shaman, or medicine man. Exorcism was commonplace in ancient times and at that time was based on magic. Babylonian priests, for example, would destroy a clay or wax image of the demon after reciting incantations. They believed that through this action, the demon itself would be destroyed. Similar rites were practiced by the Egyptians and Greeks. Belief in evil spirits and exorcism has survived in some American Indian and African religions as well.
In both the Old and New Testaments, the existence of devils and the efficacy of exorcism are presumed. The Gospels are filled with descriptive narratives about exorcisms performed by Jesus Christ. His method was not based on magic, however; rather he expelled evil spirits by prayer and by the power of his command. And he said, "This you too can do and even better than I, if you have the faith of a grain of mustard seed."
In both the Eastern and Western churches, rites of exorcism are still performed by the priest as part of the baptismal ritual, but other exorcisms are rare. Many Christians still believe in the devil but recognize that what was once believed to be possession can usually be treated as a psychological disorder. The Roman ritual contains an official rite of exorcism, but it can be used only with Episcopal permission.
The above is the description and information Funk and Wagnall's New Encyclopedia gives on exorcisms. This is the traditional belief that is held about exorcisms. However, there are many trance mediums across the world who are called on to do the rites of exorcism. Unfortunately, unless one is seeking this kind of service, these exorcists are rarely ever heard of. More popularly known are those mediums who use their gift in a sensational and entertaining way by selling their services of communicating with the dead. Today this is one of the most common ways mediums are using their talents.
Before I became an exorcist, I watched many mediums on television going through haunted houses, expressing to the audience that there were indeed ghosts in that particular building. However, they would stop right there.
Spirits and ghosts just don't hang around a building, home of a loved one, the place of their murder for nothing. Most ghosts appear to give the living warnings or sometimes they have lost their way at the time of death. Some are confused and lonely. Many of these spirits just need someone to talk with them and help them on their way. It does little good to make contact with a spirit unless the exorcist completes the job.
There is an unbelievable number of lost souls or spirits all over the world that need help in going on into the Light. Gettysburg is one of the most haunted places in America; these poor soldiers are still there waiting for someone to rescue them. The spirits of soldiers both Union and Confederate are stranded at strategic places all over the South on Sullivan's Island and all over the beaches of Charleston, South Carolina. The spirits of the Native Americans are there at Wounded Knee still running from the White Man in fear. My hope and dream is to one day be able to fund a tour in these haunted places where, as a medium and exorcist, I can help release these souls from their misery. It would be the greatest honor that I could have bestowed upon me.
Ever since the first exorcism I performed in 1980, I have always been very interested in wayward and earthbound spirits and decided to dedicate my life to helping these lost souls, as well as living souls, find their way into the Light. Therefore, I have written in this book my experience with thirty-four exorcisms, which I have conducted over the years. My purpose for writing this book is to help others to confirm their feelings about the reality of an afterlife and to offer non-believers the opportunity to look behind that big curtain beyond and at least consider expanding their awareness to consider that life goes on and on and on, even after dropping the physical body. With this book, I hope to shed a little light on this subject by sharing my own real life experiences.
