How to Give and Get Help With Jobs

My mother, who is my grandmother although I call her mother because she raised me from the time I was only a few weeks old, never owned a car; she never learned to drive and she never had a job except for keeping boarders. Yet, we were never hungry. We always had clean clothes and lived in decent neighborhoods. My mother and I have survived because she worked hard and instilled in me at an early age the importance of having a good job and being a hard worker. I began earning my keep, so to speak, before age twelve by mowing our neighbors’ lawns. At age twelve I began carrying the local evening newspaper and later the morning paper. In high school, I was a "distributive education student." That meant I went to school for half-a-day and worked the other half. My high school jobs included working for an Army and Navy store, an A&P grocery store, a printing firm, selling magazines, and rewinding film for a state government agency. I served three years in airborne units in the Army following graduation from high school. After military service, I worked for a small loan company and a local stock brokerage firm (in clerical positions) while attending college--mostly taking morning and night classes. Later, I worked as a stockbroker in Washington and New York. After graduate school, I was a college instructor. After law school, I was a college professor, a government lawyer, a regulatory lawyer, and for the last seventeen years I have practiced law with a major law firm and taught at nationally-ranked colleges and universities. I have been unemployed and had to survive on unemployment checks. I know how it feels to earn $1.25 an hour ($.10 an hour above the minimum wage in 1962), but I also know how it feels to earn a million dollars in a year. I have never had any formal training in human resources or personnel management, but I have spent a lifetime looking for jobs and helping others find jobs. I know how important jobs are to a person’s mental, emotional, and physical well being. This book is about my experiences in getting jobs and helping others get jobs. It’s about our most valuable resource--our friends--and how they can help with jobs and job promotions. I know. Ed Flippen is a practicing attorney in Richmond, Virginia. Before attending law school, he was a stockbroker on Wall Street - a job he was fired from at a time when his wife was expecting their first child. Subsequently, he received help from his father-in-law in getting a job. Since then, Flippen has helped over 100 people, including bankers, government officials, lawyers, secretaries, teachers, and recent high school and college graduates, with their job searches. This book is about what has and has not worked in helping others get jobs.

In additional to being an attorney and having been a stockbroker, Flippen served three years in airborne units in the Army. He has also taught full-time and part-time at nine colleges and universities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Flippen's wife is a pre-school teacher. They have two daughters and two grandchildren.
