At that point, trying to absorb all of this, I felt as if Satan had entered my body. I could not speak. I was writhing with noises I cannot even describe. It was as if I had to drive this shock from my body and I could only force it out with these sounds. It seemed as if minutes had passed. Finally, being able to speak, I said, "Theresa, I will have to call you back."
Tom was on the sunporch. He came in to see what was wrong. I told him and, oh, how we clung to each other in tears and utter disbelief. I thought, "Oh, my God, what will we do? How would we bear it? Our poor little girl, God help us. We had to save her. She had to live.
I could not go to bed that night. I lay on the sofa with the light on. I couldn,t bear to close my eyes. My thoughts, my visions were more than I could stand. I was having my worst nightmare and I was awake.
I just couldn't turn my thoughts off. I cried, I prayed, I cried, I prayed, and finally I slept.
