About the Book

In January l968, at the height of urban crisis in cities across America, a young black woman left Newark hoping for a new start in the Deep South. She longed for romance, for fame, for riches. She wanted love and respect, freedom from oppression and fear. Young and alone, she wanted to build a life for herself where the weather was warm. She had almost forgotten that she was moving to a place where racism is often as potent as the Florida sun.

So begins the unusual life story of Shelley Lenear, the first female deputy of the Bergen County Florida Sheriff's Department, as chronicled in her book Inside/Out.

Shelley's first person account is a revealing look at life behind the badge, as well as a moving story of one woman's struggle to know herself.

Best classified as a memoir, Inside/Out will appeal to readers everywhere. While it addresses social issues like police brutality, racism and sexism, the book is also about love, life, death and humanity. This book is a gritty, fast moving 266 pages and approximately 68,000 words. Shelley brings the kind of inside knowledge that makes for compulsive page turning.
