Autumn
The trees are bare,
And the brown leaves are small,
As the empires rise,
And as the kingdoms fall.
Autumn,
The sky is always gray,
Life goes on,
As people slowly fade away.
Autumn,
The forest is empty; no one is there.
The dying trees sway from the silent cold wind.
Why should I care?
Core
Existence... in doubt,
Confidence... is broken,
Resistance... is useless,
Ignorance... is potent,
Innocence... ends with a shout.
Eat of the fruit,
Eat to know.
Exiled from paradise,
Nowhere to go.
A civilization rises,
An empire falls apart.
Eat of the fruit, so plush,
Time to crawl back to start.

A dreamer was born who could not feel,
For his heart had become colder than steel.
Once he could believe in tomorrow,
But now he turns his head in sorrow.
Once he knew the right thing to say,
Now he is silent like his dreams of yesterday.
Once he could trust his fellow man,
But now; alone he stands.
Once he chased the stars above,
But now he chases nothing,
Not even love.

About the Book
The Dreamer is Dead . . . But He will Dream a New Dream, One Last Dream Tonight . . . The Awakening of the Dreamer is a riveting and emotional journey through the eyes of a young "Generation X" poet. This book of poetry features four collections of poems, which were written from 1989 to 1994. The first collection, Ocala, is themed around the embracement of child like fantasies coexisting with harsh realities. This collection features poems such as "Dance of the Snake," "Don’t Let them Win," and the timeless love epic, "Indompte Amour." The second collection, Haiku Fu, is a full throttle embracement of the Japanese poetic art form, which features poems such as "Ireland" and "The Crimson Flower." The next collection, The Bonfire, is regarded by many as Johnson’s most aggressive work to date. The Bonfire addresses political and social themes, such as racism, dysfunctional families, and apathy, and features poems such as "Unbroken Chains," "Civil War," and "Men Dressed in Black." It also includes the 1991 epic poem, "The Bonfire," which follows the tragic rise and fall of an unknown dreamer. The final collection, Twilight, centers around a "rites of passage" theme, involving the dark shadowy areas of life where "boy meets man" and features poems such as "Sand," "Snowman," and "The Children of Babylon." This collection also features the 1989 classic, "The Hitchhiker I: On the Road to Nowhere," which marks the first appearance of the mysterious hitchhiker who has become a reoccurring character in other works by Derrick Justin Johnson.
