"Follow me," he opened the cell, letting her out. Frightened, she followed him into the sergeant's office.
"Miss Hiken, you're a juvenile, you're under eighteen. We have to call your parents to come pick you up," Sergeant Williams looked at her. Meggie stared at this huge, black sergeant, remembering what Daddy said last October, when he came to get her, Dottie and Michael.
"Next time, young lady, if there should be one, and I certainly hope not, you are coming home to live and to go to school. I mean that, Meggie!" Dad yelled.
"You kids are so damn idealistic. Haven't you realized yet you're not going to change anything?" Dad was angrier than Meggie had ever seen him.
She thought quickly, "My parents are out of town," she struggled for words. "They're out of the country, in Europe," a very scared Meggie uttered, looking at Sergeant Williams.
"What do you suppose we should do with you? Juvenile Hall?" Sergeant Williams asked, not quite believing her.
"I have an older brother in grad school at G.W.," Meggie said, still frightened, hoping Steven would pick up on this.
"What's his number?" Sergeant Williams picked the receiver up from the phone. Meggie gave it to him, hoping, praying and watching him dial. She was able to tell when someone answered on the other end, she trembled with her fists clenched again.
"I would like to speak with Steven Hiken," Sergeant Williams stated into the receiver. Meggie's stomach was doing somersaults. There was silence on the other end of the phone. After a few seconds Steven thought, 'Meggie!' He decided to play this through.
"Speaking," Steven curiously.
"This is Sergeant Arnold Williams from the sixty-third precinct. I have your sister Meggie with me. She was picked up during a protest demonstration tonight. Can you come down and take her home?"
"Leaving now, Sergeant," Steven said, before slamming down the phone, grabbing his coat and running to his car. "Damn it!" He said to himself, driving there. The entire way, he kept repeating, "I knew it! I knew it! Why didn't I stop her?" Walking into Sergeant William's office he took one look at Meggie, and his heart sank. He'd never seen her such a mess! She was still soaked from the rain, her hair was scraggly and wet. There were smudge marks from dirt on her face. He neared her, and placed his arm on her shoulder, showing brotherly concern.
"Sergeant Williams, I'm Steven Hiken."
"Sign here; then you can go," Sergeant Williams handed him a pen and pointed to a paper on his desk.
"Let's get out of here," Steven stated. He led her to his car and helped her in. She trembled the entire time. After he started the motor, Meggie spoke for the first time.
"You lied for me!"
"What should I have done? Let you rot in jail? What the hell happened, anyway?" Steven asked in a hyped-up tone. Aside from still being soaking wet and shaking, she was now crying too. He placed his coat around her, trying to warm her.
"You must be freezing, we'll discuss this later," Steven extended one arm around her, trying to warm her more, he drove home that way. After parking, he led her up the stairs of the brownstone.
"I think a hot shower would do you a great deal of good right now," Steven stated. Taking a shirt from his drawer and handing it to her, he went into the bathroom to turn the shower on. When he returned, Meggie was removing her wet sweatshirt, revealing her beautiful, firm, orange shaped breasts. Steven stood back in awe!
"Listen, I'll be downstairs when you're finished," he said, receiving a nod from Meggie before leaving the room. Hearing the bathroom door close, he returned to his room, gathering Meggie's clothes from the floor. Heading back downstairs, he threw them in the dryer in the kitchen, took a bottle of wine from the refrigerator and made a fire in the living room fireplace. He poured himself a glass of wine, sat back and thought how frightened she looked. He had never seen her so scared, recalling her eyes had turned green.
Upstairs in the shower Meggie thought luck or fate must have brought Steven into her life. She did not know what she would have done without him tonight. Maybe Daddy was right when he told her, "God places people in our lives for a reason." Thinking about her recent experience she became angry. Then she cried, being so disillusioned about life!
Steven heard the water in the shower go off. After a few minutes he saw Meggie walk down the stairs in his shirt, which came to her mid-thigh. Those legs, they're gorgeous, just like everything else about her, I've never seen them before. Meggie walked in and stood in front of him.
"Steven, thank you. I don't know what I would have done without you," she said, with Steven pulling her to sit on his lap. He looked in her eyes, noticing they were back to normal.
"Tell me what happened," he said. Meggie started to cry again, sliding from his lap to a sitting position next to him. He placed a comforter over her legs. She was still cold.
"Here," he handed her a glass of wine, not being able to take his eyes off of her. Even with red eyes she was a beauty. Meggie drank the wine, motioned for more. Steven fulfilled her request.
"We have no rights!" Meggie angrily stated. She proceeded to tell him about the whole unfortunate experience, about her disillusionment!
"Feel better now?" Steven smiled, with his arm around her.
"I feel like the world is out there, and it's just you and me," she smiled a little, he leaned to kiss her.
They continued kissing with Steven's hand on her hip, feeling her bare skin, because she had nothing to put on other than his shirt. He unbuttoned the shirt, revealing her breasts. She made no protests this time when he caressed and kissed them. She smiled at him when he looked at her. He smiled back, taking her hand, leading her up the stairs to his room. He kissed her more passionately than she'd ever been kissed, she thought, losing her balance, falling on the bed. She lay there watching him undress. He has a great body, Meggie realized for the first time. He came to her, placing his arms around her, holding her so securely, never wanting anything to ever harm her again. He kissed her, his tongue exploring every space in her mouth.
"I love you, I have for months. I believe you knew that. I love your eyes," Steven stared into them, kissing them. Then he kissed her nose.
