'Whoa, tell me these aren't cool,' Spinner said, touching the tracks in the soft sand. 'They're weird.' Reglan matched Spinner's fascination with the strange tracks leading across the sand bar. She was ten, a year younger than Spinner, and pretty with her hair tied back in long curls. 'What about you, Otter, any idea?' Spinner said as he scruffed the head of the large dog sitting at his side. Otter weighed fifty pounds and Spinner considered him his best friend. Otter sniffed once at the tracks and growled. 'Was that a yes or no?' Reglan asked. 'Otter thinks they're weird, too.' There were two different sets of tracks, close together. The front prints, no more than two inches across, looked like a baby's hands. The back ones were much larger, closer to twelve inches wide, and webbed. Spinner tried to imagine what sort of creature recently walked across the sand in Echo Valley. But no animal he was familiar with came to mind. Slinging his knapsack to the opposite shoulder, he said, 'Follow me, and stay close.'

About the Book
When Spinner McPherson, accompanied by Reglan, a friend, and Otter, his dog, hike deep into Echo Valley, the last thing he has on his mind that day is discovering a place where creatures long thought to be extinct still exist. Reglan views things differently. But, as Spinner succinctly puts it, she's a girl. So they part ways, each doing what they think is right.
Underland's discovery and its mystical secret propel Spinner on a journey that will affect him his entire life. He almost understands too late the true meaning of Underland and it becomes a race against time to prevent Underland and all its interesting and wonderful inhabitants from vanishing from the face of the earth forever.
About the Author
Alan Nayes grew up on the Texas gulf coast. After attending medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, he moved to Southern California where he divides his time and energies between his medical practice and writing. He enjoys reading, exercising, and relaxing and fishing at the family cottage on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin.
