About the Book

Living to 100, the dream of all,

the reality of a few!

One of the great tragedies I have observed in my long career as a practicing physician is that most of us, by our life styles and attitude, produce the majority of the illnesses that we get. Yes, without realizing it, we are victims of our own behavior. Our thoughts, our reactions, our diets and our bad habits produce this “suicidal” path that we seem to thrive on. I am firmly convinced that we die too young because of this. Over all of my years in the trenches of primary care medicine, I have repeatedly seen evidence of these observations.

It is from this perspective that this book will examine our number one killer, heart disease. I will share my vast experiences with the reader and present verified, objective data to support my thesis that this plague on our community is preventable and yes, even reversible.

About the Author

Dr. Jerry Kornfeld is internationally recognized for his honest and direct discussion of health and medical topics from the mind-body reaction and spirituality, to wellness and coping with stress.

Dr. Jerry has practiced family medicine in Southern California for more than 35 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine and did his postgraduate training at the University of Southern California., Los Angeles County Genersal  Hospital,  He then went on to open a private practice specializing in family medicine. From 1988 to 1991 he also served as Chief of the Department of Family Practice, Northridge Medial Center in Northridge, California.

From 1993 to 1995, Dr. Jerry served as Medical Director of the Southern California Independent Practice Association, supervising medical quality and health care management issues for more than 60,000 lives.  He also served on the Executive Committee of the Quality Improvement Council for the national health plan, Uni-Health America, and he was a member of the Medical Directors Committee for the National IPA Coalition (NIPAC), the organization that develops standards and protocols for California's IPAs (independent practice associations).

In the early 80s, while maintaining his practice, Dr. Jerry launched a public career as an advocate for medical consumers. He broke new ground as the first medical reporter on the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles where he made frequent appearances on Eyewitness News. He also served as the on-air medical expert for AM Los Angeles, a morning show hosted by Regis Philbin. Recently, he performed a similar service on the nationally syndicated TV show, Body By Jake.

Always a relentless researcher of the most up-to-date medical information available, Dr. Jerry came to realize that many of the diseases he was diagnosing were self-induced. Indeed, he was eventually to find out that the number one killer of us all, Heart Disease, could be prevented and yes, even reversed. This realization was the impetus for his most recent book, The Hundred Year Heart.

Dr. Jerry remains active as a member of the faculty of UCLA Medical School, teaching freshman students the art of communicating with patients.

He is also in high demand as a motivational speaker specializing in healthcare issues— especially the critical role of thoughts and attitude on increasing longetivity. He travels the world and across the U.S. addressing corporate audiences at multinational companies including Bristol-Meyers Squibb, G.D. Searle and Wyeth Ayerst Laboratories, Copps Food Market and an array of company retreats. Dr. Jerry also addresses medical staffs at hospitals on dealing with depression related to managed care, changes in health care delivery, and the need for doctors to remain committed to their medical oaths. He is also actively involved with TEC International, a global organization of CEO's. The demand for his lectures became so great that he was forced to close his office last year. He also addresses general audiences, sometimes aboard cruise ships, about the things they must do to protect their most important asset, their health.

Dr. Jerry is a prolific writer and contributor to medical and trade publications including recent articles in Medical Economics, Sharing Ideas and Hospital Practice. He is also author of Fatherhood Formula, a resource book for new fathers. Dr. Jerry is a charter diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is a recipient of a Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical Association.

Dr. Jerry is very happily married with two successful daughters and two beautiful grandchildren. When not teaching, lecturing, or researching the latest breakthroughs in medicine, his time is spent in his creative passion of black and white art photography. His photos have been published and have appeared in numerous galleries. He is most proud of his recent one-man show at the Las Vegas Museum of Art.
