A key attribute of a real leader is one who inspires others. True leaders are not selfish. They want others to be successful. Therefore, this kind of leader will inspire others to excel. Ideally, the leader’s inspiration will lead others to significant levels of accomplishment. To put it another way, a leader is one who wants others to do extremely well. As such, it is rather easy to distinguish a leader of this caliber. She or he will purposely influence others to be their best. Being equipped to be able to encourage others towards excellence, esp. on a regular basis, is extraordinary. This is based on the notion and realization that most people are only interested in what benefits themselves. Effective leadership understands the unseen reward of helping others fulfill their destiny. Inspiring others to be, and do, their best is an act of leadership in that it requires having another person’s best interest in mind. This is an essential part of leadership: Leaders are interested in the well-being of others. They want the best for others. Perhaps this explains why, in reality, there are few real and true leaders. Yet, there are many in leadership positions. Generally speaking, just about any person can occupy a leadership position. Some people are in leadership positions because of who they know. Others are in leadership positions because of what they know. However, it takes a real leader to do what is best for others. There is no compromise. True leaders say and do what will inspire others towards their best. Inspiring others is not something done on a whim. It is a purposeful act based on a characteristic of leadership that clearly promotes the ideal that excellence is achievable. Furthermore, when leaders inspire others they press upon them to go beyond mediocrity and envision the possibility of reaching new heights.

About the Author
Dr. Pamela Loyd, Ph.D. has been an educator for over 19 years. She has taught undergraduate and graduate students (including students in MBA programs) at colleges and universities. In addition, she has professional experience training corporate employees (e.g., trainings related to Quality Management/Statistical Process Control). As an educator, she has a passion for helping adults learn. In particular, her interests include helping company employees understand the importance of, need for, and ways to apply, exemplary “soft skills” at all levels of the organization: employee, supervisor, management and executive leadership. Dr. Loyd also has professional experience in positions requiring supervision, management and leadership. She is a proponent of helping develop employees, supervisors, managers and leaders. As a side note, yet reflective of her passion, she looks forward to using her poetic skills as a lyricist (songwriter) to write Christian and Gospel lyrics which will hopefully be set to music in the near future.
