About the Book

Bearpaw is a historical fiction about an unreal character in historical settings. The historic events mentioned in this book are real. The early years of Bearpaw have a lot of truth and will teach you a little about the world of the Lakota People from birth to adulthood. I believe Bearpaw would make a good gift for any preteen or teen especially those who love to read and picture themselves in the world of the stories and characters that they read about.

About the Author

The story in the book is a mixture of fiction, history, plains culture and areas from my own life. My great grandfather worked for the government and my great grandmother according to all of the sources was a full blood native American. She was by all accounts half Omaha and half Lakota (Sioux). This was kept secret even from my father until his uncle let the cat out of the bag as they say. Unfortunately all of the elders have gone on. My father, his mother, both of his sisters, his uncle, his aunt, his cousin, they all knew and had the Sioux name of dad’s grandmother in their mind. However being young at the time like most teens and young adults I never asked any questions so I was only given what each of them told me from time to time. I tried contacting the rose bud reservation about it but they said without her name they coudn’t check the database to see if she had signed the roll. My father went with his half blood uncle to a council meeting once and was given a small black bears paw that had been tanned. This was sometime between 1913 and 1917. He was given the name BEARPAWS. After he passed on I took the name BEARPAW leaving off the “S”
