Excuse me, kind sir. . . Yes, it's me, way down here. Do you have just a moment to lend me your ear? I know you're important and frightfully busy; the travel alone would make anyone dizzy. I may be quite small, you may think me naïve, but please, sir, just grant me a moment's reprieve. While I don't understand political comics, or caucuses, briefings, or mixed economics, my mom always taught me that what you say matters; that the words that you choose either anger or flatter. I can't help but notice that, by your example, phrases can also belittle and trample. The words that you choose, sir, they aren't very nice. The next time you speak, sir, I wish you'd think twice. As a world leader, we must look to you. We hear what you say, and we watch what you do. It's my generation that's tied to the stake; the "deals" you make now will determine my fate.

We also tend to ask them to do as we say but not as we do—whether we realize it or not. We assume that they don’t have anything important to say or that their observations are too immature to bare consideration. In a world swirling with political rhetoric, divisiveness, anger, and fear, Dear Mr. President reminds us just how important common decency, trust, and kindness truly are. It is also a powerful reminder that both words and actions make lasting impressions and that true wisdom often springs from innocence and candid honesty. The world’s children are watching and listening; we would be wise to listen to them too.
About the Author
Kate is a New York Times featured children's author and freelance writer. Her previously published titles include Calliope the Upward-Thinking Platypus and Calliope the Upward-Thinking Coloring Book. She earned her master's degree in English language and literature from the University of Arizona. Having taught writing and literature at the college level for over 17 years, Kate has written multiple courses on topics ranging from writing, to critical thinking, to science fiction. She also has a background in microbiology, immunology, and histology, thanks to her brilliant parents. Kate lives in Tucson with her incredible husband and their five astoundingly creative children, who love hiking, cycling, writing, painting, drawing, and crafting.
