Little Lucinda lived in a very small part of a very large world. She played outside every day when the weather would allow. She played in her own yard, which was much like every other yard, except that, Lucinda’s yard had, right in the corner by her bedroom window, an enormous oak tree. The tree had been there as long as Lucinda could remember. Every part of Lucinda’s life seemed to revolve around the oak tree. At night when she went to sleep, she could see its outstretched branches silhouetted against the moonlight.

Kathleen Vossler is a lawyer in Houston. She wrote Lucinda and the Mighty Oak in 1989, as a metaphor for the challenges she was facing as a single mother of three children, working her way through college toward her goal of becoming a lawyer. She now shares Lucinda with you and hopes that you, too, will be inspired, encouraged, and empowered to seek your happiness—to follow your dreams and achieve your goals.
