Happy Birthday to YOU!” It's my party and I cry if I want to! Although this is true, often times the crying is triggered by more than you can imagine. The birthday party is going great. Then the time comes to sing the birthday and has the child has a melt-down. Mom/dad can't stop the crying following the song, so the party is now over. Mom/dad both puzzled and apologizes to friends and family. Actually everyone owes the birthday child an apology by ruining his/her special day with that song. Let's take a look! A child that is experiencing difficulty with sensory processing is sat in a chair, surrounded by friends and family. Everyone has on different colors, each person smells different and each person has a distinct tone of voice. The child is beginning to become overstimulated by the visual,auditory and olfactory stimulation. Then the singing begins..... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU…………………………… Repeated loudly, the child begins to cry. TOO MUCH!! People don't typically harmonize when singing this sing, especially children. They scream to the top of their lungs and finish up the grand finale with yelling and clapping. Can you imagine the sensoryoverload that the child is experiencing? Helpful Hint: The day of your child's birthday party is not the best time to introduce new foods, activities, friends and places. Create Happy Moments , one candle at a time!!
