In those days the buying public knew little of the workings of a direct sell company and I often found I was unpopular before I even entered the house. They’d already agreed the design with the salesperson so couldn’t understand why I needed to come round. When I was there they wanted to go out and couldn’t allow an hour and a half and what did I mean we couldn’t deliver next Wednesday, the salesperson had promised them they could and it would all be finished by Friday. Now I’m here telling them we didn’t do tiling and it was a hi-spec oven promised not the one we usually supplied. Sales Contracts are notoriously ambiguous and it often came down one person’s word against another. Needless to say visiting a customer’s property was not always a typical middle English affair involving afternoon tea and cup cakes.

About the Author
Steve Beattie was born in Watford, England, in 1964. He is an only child. His mother was an administrator and his father a draughtsman. He was trained as a junior kitchen planner then progressed through the ranks, holding key positions at a number of blue-chip home-improvement companies to become a well-respected industry professional.
