About the Book

Practicing for Practice is a handbook created for resident physicians who are on the threshold of entering practice and in the process of analyzing potential practice sites. The author believes there is sufficient information and enough advisors available on the business aspects, so those are not included. Rather, the emphasis is on the human aspects of choosing a practice and on understanding interpersonal relationships, topics that are extremely important but less frequently recognized by residents. This book will be especially valuable for residents in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Obstetrics-Gynecology because it relates humanity to hands-on patient care. All of this is accomplished in an upbeat, conversational tone, giving residents a viewpoint from which to evaluate potential opportunities at the time they are considering life-changing possibilities.

About the Author

Arnold Melnick, DO, brings much experience to the topic of assisting residents in analyzing potential practices. He practiced office pediatrics for 30 years, with heavy hospital pediatrics. During that period, he also spent considerable time in medical and organizational positions, giving him additional insights. He then entered medical education, becoming founding Dean of the Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, ultimately becoming Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the Health Professions Division of Nova Southeastern University. From that vantage point, he watched as hundreds of students and residents wrestled with this situation. On his retirement, he concentrated on his writing and has published 8 professional books and more than 215 articles. In addition, Dr. Melnick has been president or chairman of 13 professional organizations, and holds five Fellowship degrees. He has received 18 distinguished service awards from various professional groups.
