In the age of rationed medical services, a lack of quality care providers, and limited health insurance and access to health care, many pain sufferers do not receive proper medical treatment, or even a proper diagnosis. After many years working in the field of pain management, I realized there was an urgent need for a self-help medical guide to help patients, potential patients and their physicians make an accurate diagnosis and employ a successful treatment plan for their condition. The Great Pain Jack is a statement in and of itself regarding how easy an individual can treatment regimens fall victim to misdiagnosis, mismanagement and self- treatment with improper thereby rendering one susceptible to becoming "hijacked". “ Jack” can be understood to mean us a person who has been deluded into thinking that he may be able to treat himself without medical background and also to suggest a consequence that may occur when the brain is "jacked" under the usage of medication that simply masks symptoms. The book begins with a brief historical overview of pain treatment, continues with a definition of pain and a basic explanation of how the nervous system detects it. This is followed by a chapter detailing an average day in the life of a pain-management physician, helping you, the patient, understands how a pain doctor thinks and sees the world. This section deals with everyday medical dramas, battles with health insurance providers, surgical emergencies, and life or death situations, as well as the more mundane administrative tasks every pain-management doctor performs everyday. In order to provide specific questions for the area in which you are suffering pain, there are chapters on all parts of the body, beginning with the head and moving through each area of the body. In easy to understand vocabulary, various conditions that can develop and cause pain are discussed together with common treatments for these afflictions. Real life case studies are woven throughout to illustrate the real-life drama of finding the right diagnosis. Often patients do not present their physicians with an accurate medical history, or they simply lack the medical knowledge to accurately communicate their symptoms to their doctor. Such misinformation and miscommunication often results in incorrect diagnoses and months, sometimes years of fruitless trips to various specialists. For this reason, each chapter in this book ends with a mapping questionnaire intended for you to use so that your physician can better diagnose your affliction and get a good idea of the severity of the pain this affliction is causing. In short, it will help you and your doctor formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

About the Author
Dr John F. petraglia is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist practicing in Southern and the Central Valley of California. He shares his greater than 25 year experience of treating chronic and acute pain conditions through the eyes of a busy pain management provider. He provides information relating to proper diagnosis and includes sketches and workbook type questionnaires in an effort to help the reader better understand and work with their physician to diagnose their condition. Dr. Petraglia shares these stories of chronic pain affliction through the vignettes of characters that may suffer similar conditions in order to provide learning and direction to the reader. Dr. Petraglia attended medical school at the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center and performed his residency at the New York Hospital Cornell-Columbia Medical Center. He currently has an active practice in all aspects of pain management, is published in other medical journals and is involved in weekly support group education to help those who suffer in pain better understand the proper usage of medications.
