About the Author

I was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire in 1942, eldest son of a lamplighter. I attended Secondary school and then joined the Army at seventeen and a half. Serving with the Airborne division. Seeing service in East and southwest Africa. Aden, the Persian gulf and Northern Ireland After serving 12 years in Her Majesty’s Forces I began growing Fuchsia species in 1973. In those days there were not many species around and some of them were wrongly named. In 1993 I decided to go out to Ecuador to look for species. I had a very good trip, finding 23 of the 24 species indigenous to Ecuador. This spurred me on. Since then I have been to Ecuador 3 times, Peru 4 times, Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela once and finally Colombia in March 2010. I have collected 63 different species 30 of which were new to cultivation. This book has been my ambition for several years as there is not a book that deals solely with the genus Fuchsia. Professor Paul E. Berry, the world authority on the genus Fuchsia inspired me to write this book. To him I owe great debt of gratitude.
