About the Author

he Muskegon Community Health. Project {MCHP) was initiated in 1993 as a partnership between the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. In 1998, the MCHP was incorporated as a Michigan non-profit and received federal tax-exempt status in May 1999. The MCHP is governed by a 19-member Board of Directors that represents providers, payers and consumers.

MCHP''s purpose is to facilitate community dialogue on issues relating to health care reform. Specifically, MCHP''s work Falls within three core areas: health resource partnerships; community education; and community wide coverage/access. Health Project initiatives are developed through a community-driven decision process. Issues are identified through general outreach, public forums and countywide health data. "Leadership Teams" study the issues and develop strategies that lead to community-driven solutions. MCHP currently has 12 initiatives developed in this way. MCHP remains unique in its decision-making structure: a non-traditional bottom-up process, fostering collaborative development and implementation of solutions.

The Health Project has been successful in bringing new health resources to Muskegon County from a broad spectrum of local, state and national sources. These include the US Departments of Health & Human Services, Commerce and Agriculture; MI Dept of Community Health; United Way; Community Foundation for Muskegon County; White Lake Foundation; Muskegon General Osteopathic Foundation; Gerber Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of MI, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; Cities of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights; Mercy General Health Partners; Hackley Hospital System; MI Center for Rural Health; American Dental Association Foundation; Verizon; as well as many local businesses and individuals.
