The Inquisitor looked in the mirror propped above the chipped bathroom sink. Today, he found his face intolerably sad. He started to shave. He used an old fashioned razor, an army razor that doubled well as a weapon. Between each stroke, he dipped the long blade in water and waited until it shed its human debris. His hands moved deliberately, prompted by an inner rhythm that controlled, for now, his rage. The newspaper article left no doubt. Catherine Kemeny's nomination for Deputy Attorney General for Human Rights was imminent. Why did he let her live? If someone - anyone - pointed to him now, it was over. To think they had assured him he was safe. "Just watch your back with The Fifth. From us you've got nothing to fear, all records are destroyed." How about now? How about Kemeny? His hand pressed hard against the blade. The mirror reflected the single 40 watt bulb, just enough light to see the cracked turquoise tiles. Everything around him was gaping, wounded, torn apart. Except for the mirror, and his face. Through some miracle, they had both remained intact. "Lesson number one, Vorody. Torture is necessary." He can still hear the words of comrade Lidoevsky -- Liddy. They are both about the same age, mid twenties. This is Grigor's first assignment at Lubyanka. Liddy has been around Stalin's political prison much longer. He graduated almost four years before from KGB academy. "They got me straight from the crib" he jokes, rolling a Black Russian. When he smokes, his eyes narrow with pleasure and his moon shaped cheeks smile. He always smiles. Liddy is the funny man around KGB headquarters. The problem with him is he expects torture victims to laugh at his jokes too. ***** This woman could love. She could think, run a country if she had to. And love. He caught himself wishing that he was someone else - anyone but Robert Stone. He wanted her as she lay warm and sleeping, without will. He played with her, his perfect toy, enjoying the taste of her, making her moan and twist around him begging for more. She woke to sex with a man she could barely distinguish, large and dominant, riding above her, making her weak with desire. She followed his rhythm and obeyed his whispered instructions as he led her to a place where nothing, absolutely nothing was more important than his heartbeat against hers, the pulse of their bodies, his hands, and their immediate and insatiable need. * * * The next day, two people knew the President was a changed man. His favorite secret service guard, no-last-name-Roger, who had escorted Kay to the hotel and whose nature sealed his lips tighter than anyone's orders. The Last Inquisitor
This is the first novel written by a former magazine editor, now an internet fashion news publisher, and a Manhattan lawyer for private intelligence investigators who has authored a satirical newsletter in the intelligence community. The chemistry between the female and male authors make the book a smart mix of compelling romance, up-to-the-minute politics, and realistic post-cold war intrigue, which with the commentary, paints a fresco of the good and evil of political America in the 1990’s.
The lead character is a 35 year old, attractive and gutsy federal prosecutor whom an embattled President nominates for an unprecedented post, and with whom he falls in love. Her fiercely independent lifestyle draws opposition from a host of special interest groups. But it is her past, and an obsessive quest to prosecute former East Bloc secret police who slipped into the US, which cause powerful dark forces – including a larger than life former KGB heavy and, for a maze of riveting reasons, certain CIA factions – to so oppose her nomination that they smear her politically, then threaten the romantically reckless President with a painful choice, and ultimately plot her assassination.
It is a mix of political passions, national security interests, media smears, a jealous wife and mistress, murders, attempted murders, a terrifying closing chase, a modern woman heroine, gay heroes, an ambivalent rescuer, fabulously evil spy villains, and a charismatic, libidinous and passionate President. It is political and social commentary, written in an easy journalistic style, spiced by inside items of interest.
