I've Seen The Past

Mark gave a quick overview.  “Oh boy, this farm needs a load of repairs, and look at those weeds.”

      They stepped out and strolled hand in hand to the front door with looks of uneasy puzzlement.  Mark pressed the buzzer and the pair heard only silence.  He then rapped loudly twice. 

      Within a few seconds, the creaking door swung open and a man, five-foot-eight, neatly dressed in pressed black trousers with a spotless white shirt and black tie greeted them.  Rupert, showing a sour expression, stared in disbelief at the couple.

      This sharp-featured man in his late fifties, sported a long narrow nose, slicked down black hair parted in the middle and a clean-shaven face except for a pencil thin mustache.  His pallid complexion revealed a person who rarely, if ever, stepped into the sunlight.  He glowered at them.  “I was under the impression that Mark would be here alone.  This is not good, so I think you’d both better leave.”

                         As Rupert began to close the door, Mark’s right hand pushed it further open.  “Wait a

                  minute,  Rupert!  Bobbie and I have been living together for three years and by this time,

                  we just about know what each other is thinking.  Even if she wasn’t here, I’ll bet within

                  three hours after I get home, she’d be able to wheedle out everything you would have told

                  me.   We’re as close as pages in a book, and we’ve always managed to keep secret anything,

                  which strictly concerns our private lives.

                        Rupert, with a twinge of trepidation, let go of the doorknob, and a distrustful expression

                  crossed  his face as he spoke in an almost inaudible voice.  “Come in.”

                      The couple entered and Rupert led them to the parlor.  On the way, the lovers were greeted

                  by an assortment of old broken down furniture scattered about the sparsely furnished house.   

                      Rupert pointed to an aging, well-worn faded red sofa and sat opposite the pair in a large 

                  brown leather armchair, badly in need of repair.

                        With an obvious glum expression, Rupert studied Mark and Bobbie for several seconds.    

                  Physically, he seems right.  The question will be, is he truly adventurous and intelligent enough

                  to comprehend everything?   And she’s--good-looking, but does she have a brain?”
