WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU AS THE STEWARDESS? The stewardess manages the interior of the yacht and is in charge of all guest service. The scope of this position is extensive! You will be serving owners and guests, and cleaning, maintaining, and organizing this five-star facility. This includes all surfaces, amenities, carpets, fabrics, service pieces, laundry (other crew members’ items as well), appliances, and equipment. Also, you are responsible for organizing all cabinets, holds, lockers, and drawers...You may also be charged with some of the yacht’s provisioning—this means buying anything that is needed, from placemats to coffee spoons to comforters to ice buckets. The owners may extend one of their many homes to you for your vacations, fly you on their private plane, or give you tickets to their private box for a sporting event. Of course, there may also be more boring (but valuable) benefits like 401(k), medical, and dental benefits… they’re good too!
As your career in yachting progresses, you may have the opportunity to advance your position and education. Launching your yachting career as a stewardess is simply the beginning. Your desire to explore other interests, will likely translate into greater value for the yacht owner. Consider that your passion for cooking may lead you to a chef role. Your love for children may lead you to home-schooling the owners’ children, who are onboard for a year-long circumnavigation. Interests in massage therapy, yoga, SCUBA diving, event planning, interior design and beautician skills are in demand on yachts all over the world. Working on a yacht is a terrific avenue to explore and strengthen your specialty. The owner may even pay for your schooling.

Author Catherine Topel and her husband Rick currently operate private and charter yachts on the East coast of the United States. They met while both were attending Chapman's School of Seamanship and Rick introduced Catherine to formal yachting. While Catherine's background is certainly nautical, her decision to pursue a career in yachting was made at the tender age of thirty-five! Always intrigued by the ocean, a life at sea was her destiny. It was an everpresent thread through her every pursuit. Her first interview with a crew agency however, was a flop! Having overcome gigantic challenges in her past; a broken neck at twenty-one, an honors graduate of The University of Florida architecture program and launching a professional golf career at twenty-six, she was not accustomed to being told she'd never make it. The very next morning a call came from the very agent who'd scoffed at her! Catherine was off within hours to work on her first yacht, a 150 footer! Within 3 years she accelerated through the ranks and has tailored a successful career and lifestyle on a yacht that she lovingly runs with her husband. She credits yachting with enabling her to develop her own interests, as she is a USCG 100 GT licensed captain, a chef, an interior designer on land and sea and a danger with a toilet brush!
