Call me naïve, but I believe the vast majority of parents truly love their children and would do anything for them. It just gets a little complicated when you can no longer live with the person that helped you bring them into the world. Emotions are out of control, perspective is lost, and it becomes very difficult to stay grounded with what is really important.
If parents can muster the strength to pull themselves away from the emotional turmoil long enough to get a glimpse of reality and perspective, their children can not only survive a divorce, but can also be strong well-adjusted kids with the opportunity to lead a fun and balanced lifestyle. To accomplish this, each parent must dig deep into the love that they have for their children and find the power to create a truce. The New Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language gives the definition for the word “accord” as “Agreement; harmony of the minds.” Hence, the name of this book, The Parental Peace Accord.
The Parental Peace Accord is not some magic gimmick that will make your kids okay with your divorce. It does not represent some cutesy trend like a latest diet fad. Plain and simple, it is work. It is a unique process that provides an approach for parents to achieve some harmony for the benefit of their children during a dissolution of marriage. If you care enough about your children to have this truce, to create The Parental Peace Accord with your ex-spouse or soon-to-be ex-spouse, you had better be committed to work harder than you ever have before.
So the question is, my friend, are you willing to do all of this for your children? Don’t say yes too quickly. If you are truly committed to having success with The Parental Peace Accord, you and your child’s other parent are going to have to do things that other divorced people say are crazy. You will be doing things that people say “By God, that’s just not natural!” And yes, you will be in those public places with your children, and possibly your ex, and your peripheral vision will see people leaning close to each other whispering. And if you’ve got the right perspective, you’ll say to yourself, “Screw ‘em, I don’t care what they think, this is about my kids, not them!”
Now this is where you’ve got to trust me. If you keep your head on straight, and really make some emotional stretches, in the end those same whispering idiots will be coming up to you and say, “You know I just want you to know how neat I think your kids are. They are just so well adjusted and balanced. You guys have done a great job.” When you hear that, and you will, you will feel a warm glow that only a parent with a deep abiding love for their children can feel.
