Muskegon is a hockey town. For 46 straight years it has been a proud member of three distinguished leagues: the International Hockey League, the Colonial Hockey League, and now, the United Hockey League. And back in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Muskegon was part of the Michigan Ontario Hockey League.

Muskegons Hockey fans have enjoyed the sport of hockey with a fanaticsm that other communities can only envy. And why shouldn't they? They have had some of the most dedicated owners, coaches, and players come through their city, bringing with them 12 regular season championships and 8 playoff championships.

But championships are only part of the story.

About the Author

Jay VandeVoorde has lived in the area his entire life. He is the youngest of six children and draws many of his stories from the experiences with his family and friends. Jay attended Muskegon Catholic Central High School, Muskegon Community College and Central Michigan University. He spent one summer studying Renassaince and Reformation in Europe. Since graduating he has taught in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools and has coached track and basketball. He has served as a Title I/Instructional Assistant the past four years, where his duties include: being MEAP Coordinator, afterschool tutoring director and retired teacher tutoring program.

Jay has traveled extensively in Europe, enjoys gardening and all sports, especially hockey, which has lead to his new book, Muskegon's Hockey History and Heroes. Which follows the release of Deer Song, a children's tale of hunting in Michigan. He has visited numerous schools, presenting to teachers, parents and students on literacy and writing development.
