We heard rumors about Baptist Memorial Hospital: no water, people dying. We listened to Mayor Ray Nagin’s Speech on the radio, pleading to the rest of America for aid. President Bush had flown over the city in Air Force One earlier in the week and had not stopped. At least, that was what we heard on the radio.
We also heard that the Mayor wanted to know where the support was. There had been no help, aid or support from anyone. We now realized that we had no communications from officials because there were none.
The city of New Orleans was in turmoil. The only support we had was from the New Orleans Police Department, and they were under dire stress.
Our neighbor, Mr. Floyd, who had been forced to leave, returned. The “rescuers” had taken him to the St Claude Bridge and he had walked back. He said it was like a jungle out there. People were just roaming around in the city with no support, no water or food. It was hot and flooding, and people were literally dying.
