…After a while, Dominic was called in. Kate stood up to accompany him to the examining room, but the receptionist abruptly intervened and said, “Lady, no one other than the patient is allowed to go into the examining room.”
“No way!” Kate replied in a rather loud voice. “My son will not see the doctor alone. I have to go with him.”
“I don’t understand why you have to give me such a hard time,” Betty Whilling complained as she stood up. “Rules are rules. Well, just a minute then, I’m going to tell the doctor. I’ll be right back.” She then started walking towards the examining room. As soon as she arrived, she leaned towards the doctor. “That stupid woman doesn’t want her brat to come in alone,” she whispered into the doctor’s ear because his door was open.
“Okay, make an exception this time,” Doctor Sayahagain replied, also in a whisper. “Let her come in. I’ll take care of her.”
Betty went back to tell them to go inside, and Kate and Dominic went into the examining room together. As soon as they arrived, the doctor told Betty to bring another chair from the waiting room, and then he told Dominic to have a seat. When Betty returned with another chair, Kate sat in it, and the doctor started his “Ah” routine as soon as Kate sat down, “Open your mouth and say, ‘Ah,’ Sonny.” Dominic did as the doctor told him, and Doctor Sayahagain told him to say, “Ah” again. Dominic obeyed the doctor for the second time, and the doctor then went on with his usual routine to get rid of them as quickly as possible, “That’ll be $100 plus expenses plus other charges. Go see my receptionist, so she can tell you what the total of your bill is. She’ll also give you a prescription for your medicine. Good bye. Next!”
As soon as Kate noticed that the doctor was trying to get rid of them, she was very concerned about the outcome of her visit. “Doctor Sayahagain,” she said, “the reason why we’re here is because my son gets frequent headaches. You didn’t even bother to do anything about it, even though it’s written down on my application. Why did I bother to fill it out then, if you don’t even trouble yourself to look at it? And what is that prescription that you mentioned for?” Betty heard Kate talking, so she waited before calling the next patient.
The doctor became very obnoxious when Kate questioned him. He looked at the form, simply to see what her name was. “Who’s the doctor here, Miss Smhartd, you or me?” he asked.
“I’m not claiming to be a doctor,” Kate answered. “That’s why I brought my son to see you, because you’re the doctor. At least, I think you are.”
“Well then, let me do my job,” the doctor went on. “Don’t you know, Miss Smhartd, that when a child tells you that he has a headache, he’s only doing it to get attention?”

This story, although fictional, has been comically exaggerated. However, there is a great deal of reality, and some readers will find it very convincing, especially if they had similar experiences as the ones stated in this book. The story deals with the daily occurrences in certain doctors’ offices, as well as certain hospitals in a major metropolitan city in the Northeast of The United States. You will see the worst treatments performed by the worst doctors. However, later on in the story, you will also see the best treatments offered by the best doctors.
The story contains a generous amount of extremely grim occurrences, but it also contains a great deal of generosity and compassion. You will see that there are some people in this story who went out of their way to do the right thing. You will also see that there are numerous people who kept the promises that they made to others when they were in need.
If this story changes the life of only one person for the better, even for a brief moment, then it was worth writing this book.
The names used in this story have been chosen by the author as a description of each person or place involved. Actual names were not used in order to protect the innocent – and the guilty. It may take some readers a little time to accept the names, but after they have accepted them, they will find the story extremely enjoyable and very interesting. Some readers may find it to be a very valuable and educational account of situations that they should avoid.
About the Author
After many years of telling stories, I have decided to write several books about the many tales that I told my children at bedtime when they were small. They enjoyed every one of my stories, even when they were growing into adolescence. They wanted to hear a different story every night before they went to sleep.
This is one story that I never told my children, but I did tell it to a group of adults during a convention. The president of a major corporation advised me that I should write a book about it. Well, that was a couple of decades ago, but here I am, and I just finished writing it now. Of course, I added a few things to the story to make it conform more adequately today.
“The Clock of Peaceville” and “King Generous and King Selfish” were the first two books that I published. “Beware of Doctors and Hospitals” is my third book. I am writing many other books, which will be published in the near future.
I have a Computer Science degree from NYCC. I have done many things in my life, but I am now a retired real estate broker. I am a divorced father of two grown children. I love the outdoors, but what I enjoy the most is fishing on the ocean, and I can’t seem to get enough of it. When I’m not fishing, I am writing stories.
