His desire to write Ñgeumba came about as a result of course work he took at the university where his professor frequently referred to unwritten African languages as underdeveloped and unstructured. The characterization of unwritten African languages in these terms led the author to start work on developing a written format for Ñgeumba. Earlier attempts involved developing a unique set of scripts or alphabets in Ñgeumba. The invented scripts were temporarily shelved following several interviews with native speakers who strongly recommended the use of Latin alphabets during this first phase of Ñgeumba language development.
