Research Associate of the Linguistic Institute of Budapest (1955-1956). Lecturer at the University of Göttingen, Germany (1957-1959). Professor for Finno-Ugric Studies at the University of Hamburg, Germany (1959–1977). Chairman of the Finno-Ugric Studies Department, University of Hamburg, Germany. 1969–1977 . Tenured Full Professor for Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana (since 1977). Secretary General of the the Association of Ural-Altaic Studies in Göttingen//Germany (1958–1977). Managing Editor (1957–1967) and Editor-in Chief (1967-2006) of the journal Eurasian Studies Yearbook.
