Coyote's Christmas Tale/Tail Many years ago,when the animals could still talk, there lived a mischievous coyote. Many stories have been written about the mischievous coyote. This is one of them. It was a cool, sunny day here in Navajoland. The first snow had just covered the ground. Indian summer was long gone and winter had arrived. December, the month the Navajo call The Big wind, had arrived. Coyote was hungry and a bit frustrated. It seemed to him he had, less and less room to frolic around these days. The people were building more hogans in many of the places he used to roam. These winter months were a lonesome time for coyote. Many of the creatures he spent his time with were hibernating. It was around this time that coyote spotted a flock of sheep grazing near a hogan. Coyote sauntered along toward the sheep, when he heard Lobo howling at the moon and followed the sound.

About the Book
The story Coyote’s Christmas Tale is about a young coyote who lived on the Dinetah, also referred to as the Navajo Reservation. It is a children’s story that encompasses elements of the American Southwest. The story contains animals from the southwest, as well as Native Americans, the Dine, who are more widely known as the Navajo. The story does have some traditional Native American elements, but it is not meant to be a historical piece of writing. The story allows for the readers to use their imagination and to make their own inferences. I hope you enjoy it.
About the Author
Andy Melenchek has worked as an educator for more than twenty-five years. Most of those years have been as an elementary and middle school teacher, with more than fifteen years working with Native American students in Western New Mexico. He has also taught eight years in the Los Angeles Unified School District working with inner-city students. He is presently retired from teaching and living in Richmond, Texas, just outside of Houston.
