Mr. Rabbit Has the Blues Mr. Rabbit was unhappy. It was time to eat and everywhere he looked, carrots co could not be founc. Mr. Rabbit was also unhappy with himself. You see, Mr Rabbit was little and wanted to be special and different like the other animals. Mr. Rabbit had a gift for singing. Everyone liked to hear him sing. The animals in the forest would often gather around to listen while Mr. Rabbit sang his favorite tunes. One day, Mr. Rabbit was thinking to himself, I wonder what it's like to be a bear or a lion or a crocodile or a bird. Yes, a burd! Then I could fly away from this misery. Mr. Rabbit sat under a tall tree to take a nap. He was almost asleep when he felt someone standing before him. Mr. Rabbit was afraid. "Who are you?" he asked. "I am the Grantor of Wishes. I am here to grant you a wish." Mr. Rabbit could not believe what he heard. "The Grantor of Wishes?" he gasped with a surprised look. He stood up slowly. With a timid voice, he said, "I want to fly like a bird." The Grantor of Wishes replied, "Your wish will be granted on one condition." "What condition is that?" asked Mr. Rabbit. "The condition is… Free Preview (The Bird) Sometime ago, there was a bird with a beautiful singing voice. One day, it settled on the branch of a tall tree close to a well found in a nearby town. A young girl happened to be filling her pot with water at the well. When the pot was full, she put it on her head and started walking home. As she passed by the tree, the bird began to sing. What a beautiful song, she thought. Forgetting the pot of water on top of her head, she looked up to see where the singing was coming from. Crash! The pot fell on the ground and shattered all over the place. Oh, was she unhappy as she looked at the broken pieces! She then tried to figure out where the bird was hiding, but the bird remained very still. No one believed her story at home. Her family thought she was just making excuses. This made her unhappy because she did not want to disappoint her family. Meanwhile, the bird sang all day, everyday. Sometimes it would even change its tune a little to make it sound fancy. Days later, another girl went to the well. While she was away…

MR. RABBIT HAS THE BLUES
Mr. Rabbit daydreams about flying like a bird. The Grantor of Wishes appears and gives Mr. Rabbit his wish. Mr. Rabbit then begins a journey that takes him on an adventure that is bigger than he bargained for.
THE BIRD
Several children are mysteriously drawn to a bird's beautiful song. They find that the song is coming from a tree; no one can see the bird. Is it really a bird? Or is it a dream?
About the Author
Gabre' Medhin was born and raised in Passaic, New jersey. After graduating from high school, he attended West Virginia State University and received a bachelor's of science degree. He later received a master's of arts degree from Temple University. As an educator, he has over twenty-five years of experience utilizing music and the creative arts to help young people realize their potential.
Gabre' Medhin is known for blending music performance with storytelling as a means to motivate and expand reading and literacy among school-age children. The story, Mr. Rabbit Has the Blues, is an outgrowth from those performances. Gabre' is the author of The Lion and the Mouse (2011).
