The room was dark except for some flickering light. Jess hit the light switch but it didn’t turn on. He struggled to see after walking in from the bright hallway. He worked his way past the couch and banged his leg on a table or something.
“Ouch, fuck.” Jess grabbed his shin and felt around for a clear path into the room. “Hey Kendra, you in here? Whoa…”
Kendra sat in the middle of the empty room in a lotus position. She was drenched in sweat even though she wore only a light yellow tank top and some panties. The balcony door was open wide, and a light wintry breeze blew in. Oddly, the outside winter breeze felt warm compared to the room.
Jess walked quickly to the balcony door and looked out. He shut the open door and quickly turned his attention back to Kendra. She had a number of small candles lit, and a few papers lying around. It looked like someone had spray painted in red on the walls and carpet.
Jess swallowed hard as he walked toward Kendra. Her eyes were open, but only the whites were showing. He crouched down beside her and pulled close to see if she was still breathing.
“Jesus, Kendra, you all right?” He shivered badly in the cold and waited for her to respond. He saw her chest rise slightly from very shallow and slow breaths, and he could just barely see the trickles of frozen vapor curl out of her mouth. Despite the cold, she looked burning hot. He reached out with his finger and lightly touched a big bead of sweat rolling down her cheek. Her eyes rolled forward and stared at him, unblinking.
Jess fell back from his awkward crouch and braced himself with his hand on the soaking wet carpet. “Fuck, Kendra. What the hell is going on? Why was the door open, was someone else in here?”
She parted her cracked lips and let out a raspy laugh. “Many are in here.”
Friend or not, Jess decided to get the hell out. That wasn’t Kendra’s voice. He fell backwards while trying to get up, soaking his shirt on the carpet. He scrambled away from her while the couch scooted toward the door as if pushed. This couldn’t be happening. He momentarily stopped moving and stared at the blocked doorway.

About the Author
Mr. Schrock graduated Purdue University as an engineer and currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife and two kids. He is a partner in a consulting firm that helps organizations develop innovative web and business strategies. He currently retains possession of his own soul. This is his first novel.
