INTRODUCTION: VIGNETTES FOR
UNDERSTANDING
LITERARY AND OTHER RELATED CONCEPTS
As a teacher I have always
appreciated the willingness of other, more seasoned instructors to share their
expertise with me, and I, in turn, have eagerly shared mine with the “novitiates”
of the trade. It has, therefore,
occurred to me how nice it would be to place in a little, easy-to-access
handbook some of the lessons that I have found successful in my classroom. My students seem to love to hear little
stories that illustrate the points I am trying to make and it seems, as a
secondary benefit, they retain the information that much better if they can
recall a cute vignette that had been used to clarify the lesson at any earlier
time.
Consequently, in the following pages both teachers (and
students) can find material which correlates to the understanding of literary
and other concepts as it pertains to works of well-written fiction.
Please also note that in the
sections which include the various sample
questions, occasionally there are parentheses within which are suggestions
for further research. Some of these are directed to the teacher
while others are directed to the students (although both might enjoy doing the
research and then following-up by sharing the information with each
other). These questions for the most
part (some of which are repeated because new information or perspectives may
produce different answers) are meant to be thought-provoking; students, therefore, cannot rely solely on
the text in the literature--they will have to develop intuitive and inferential skills as well as do the research in
order to arrive at meticulously wrought answers. The research itself will help students
develop their library and computer skills through their use of card
catalogues, reference books, non-fiction books (and their indices), microfiche,
the Internet, and so forth. These
selections and their questions can furthermore be employed to prompt interdisciplinary studies.

About the Book
Throughout Ms. Jenkins’ career as
a teacher--when she has observed “freshmen” teachers and especially when she
remembers her own experiences starting out in the profession--she has been
acutely aware of just how frightening it can be to step into the classroom for
