Something’s Wrong
One day, Gigi woke up and everyone in the house was gone. No Adam, no Becca. Their parents were gone, too.
The house was empty. They hadn’t even left her any food. Gigi was all alone.
Out in the Cold
Gigi went off into the streets looking for her family, but she couldn’t find them.
She got lost, and she had to sleep outside. It started to rain hard. She was wet and cold.
She was homeless, and very sad.
Skid Row
With no one to feed her or take care of her, Gigi was homeless for a long time. She wound up in a bad neighborhood, in an area called Skid Row.
Some of the other homeless dogs were mean and vicious and kept trying to bite her. She was scared almost all the time.
Even worse, there was very little to eat. Gigi was always hungry. Sometimes she was afraid she would never eat again.
So Gigi ate garbage, and whatever else she found lying on the street. Lots of times it made her sick. But she had no choice.
Pretty soon she got very skinny. And her beautiful coat of thick black hair got all tangled and dirty. Gigi was a mess, and she knew it.
A Stranger Offers to Help
One day a stranger drove up in his car and opened the door. He held up a hot dog and motioned for Gigi to get in.
Gigi knew she shouldn’t get in a car with a stranger. But she hadn’t eaten in days. She was hungry and sick and miserable. So she got in the car.
Right away, she knew it was a big mistake. She had gotten in the car with a bad man!
Tied up in the Basement
The bad man took Gigi to his house. It was rundown and dirty and looked scary.
He took her down to the basement and tied her up in chains. There she found other dogs he had taken home off the street.
Gigi was lonely and scared. She cried every day.
But whenever she cried, the bad man hit her. Pretty soon, she never made any noise at all.
Gigi Becomes a Mommy. But Her Puppies Are Taken Away.
Gigi soon became a Mommy. She had a litter of eight puppies. They were beautiful dogs, like her. She loved them and was proud of them, like any Mommy.
But then the bad man came and took all her puppies away. Gigi was so sad. She was crying on the inside. But she kept quiet. She was afraid the bad man would hear her.
What was going to happen to her now?
Making a Break For It
One day Gigi saw that the bad man had forgotten to tie her up. Then she noticed he had fallen asleep.
This was her big chance!
She quietly sneaked up the stairs. Then she ran out the door. She ran and ran. And then she ran some more. She ran as fast and as far as she could run.
Then, when she couldn’t run anymore, she stopped and looked around. The bad man was nowhere to be found.
She was free!
