The Sheriff's spike heels were loud on the gleaming marble floor.
She walked slowly, the length of the table, studying the slender little body.
"He had a birth-trauma disorder, he had problems metabolizing food, he had to have a specific, high-dollar solution pumped into his belly just to keep him alive. He was nine years old with the mental age of just under two years. He was prone to infection, to pneumonia, he was expected to die young."
The Sheriff looked sharply at the coroner.
"Why does my gut tell me this is murder?"
The Sheriff shook her head and sighed.
"I have to tell the family something. What can you give me?"
"At this time, Sheriff, condolences are all I have."
"I'll be in my office. The moment you have something, call me."
The Sheriff's heels were loud and hollow-sounding on the burnished floor as the stainless-steel doors hissed open to allow her exit.
The Coroner gazed after her, even after the automatic doors swung shut behind her.
"Now where was she when I was young?" he muttered as he uncovered the instrument tray.

Sheriff Will Keller came into town with an attitude, a shotgun and a great set of legs.
Sheriff Will Keller let it be known the Sheriff's word was law, and made it stick.
Sheriff Will Keller arrested the Mayor and shot up the saloon within a half hour of arriving in town.
Things have been peaceful and quiet as a result.
Until now.
Murder has been done: not the face to face conflict of loud voices, bared steel, a knife in the gut: no, this is the coward's murder of a little boy, the poisoning of a helpless, handicapped child in his own bed.
The Sheriff is not happy about this.
There will be justice.
The Sheriff will see to it.

About the Author
LINN KELLER is an expatriated Appalachian storyteller who lived "under the siren" for more than two decades as a firefighter-EMT, EMT-Paramedic and deputy marshal ... simultaneously.
Somewhere in all that active confusion he became a nurse, and through it all he remains licensed and active in municipal water and wastewater treatment.
A lifetime historian, researcher and re-enactor, Keller lectures on the Civil War and Morgan's Raid, lives reluctantly in Northeast Ohio when he cannot get away to a Western European monastery in the 10th Century, where he portrays Brother William, a Cistercian monk -- or into the American West in the 1880s, where he portrays the second Sheriff of Firelands County, Colorado.
His wife assures him he still doesn't know what he wants to do when he grows up.
Keller has written The Sheriff's Legacy (October 2008) and now its sequel, The Sheriff's Betrayal. The third book in the Sheriff's series, The Sheriff's Journal, is planned for October 2010, with another in the works.
