Aren't You "Por-Getting" Something, Grandpa?

“Grandpa, aren’t you por-getting (forgetting) something?” These are the familiar words of my grandson before he leaves to go home or before I leave him. It all started when he was younger. I used to give him a hug and a kiss or throw him a kiss when we left each other.
One day, I must have forgotten and rushed off. He stood there with a grin, dimples and eyes sparkling saying, “aren’t you por-getting something, grandpa?” I threw him a kiss and off he ran.
How often do we forget? We forget to say, “I love you,” “I miss you,” “see you soon,” or some friendly saying that might help someone else feel better. We all need hugs in our daily lives. God loves us. We should thank him often, and we should love others and let them know that God also loves them.
My sister and brother-in-law were great collectors of Aladdin mantle lamps. I believe they had accumulated over 150 lamps and many of them were antiques. They even had a special room where the most expensive ones were showcased.
Our Grandmother had worked for the Aladdin Company and had cut most of the mantles for these especially brilliant lamps. We were always interested in how bright they were and how important they were in the rural areas with no electricity.
I was really amused when the electricity went out in there home during a very bad storm. My brother-in-law was the hero when he said, “let’s light one of the Aladdin lamps.” Everyone agreed and set about trying to do just that. A complete surprise came when they learned that they did not have one drop of oil for any of these wonderful lamps.
That same situation was a catastrophe in the Bible. Remember the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13? “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were wise and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” Be ready at all times for we know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Lord cometh.
