A straight sword with double blades is considered as a short weapon. There are many practice routines in different styles of Chinese martial arts. However, there are not a lot of books introducing the basic practices. In the current book, the basic 12 methods of straight sword practice are introduced (Part I). We may practice them with a fixed step. We focus on hand moves first. We then practice the same moves with moving steps. Once we are good at each single sword method. We may combine the single methods randomly and practice (Part II).

In late 1970's, I learned some basic swordplay at high school Kuo Shu club. It was much fun to learn. In the beggining, the practice sword was unwieldy and cumbersome. After some practice, the sword became lighter and lighter. Finally, the sword did not exist. I did not feel any weight anymore. The sword became part of me and my movement. Where my mind goes, the sword goes, too. Later, I also learned staff fighting. However, the straight sword remains my favorite weapon of practice. Some decades later, swordplay is still on my weekly routine to practice.
