Two days later was the first day that Joshua woke up in time for breakfast (or at least a late breakfast). His mother was pleased to see even this much of an improvement in him. He still denied any effort to spend time with the rest of the family and sat in his room all day until nightfall when, again for the first time, he joined them for a brief dinner, said very little, and then returned to his room. Again at the sink doing dishes, his mother started to think about how much he has improved in just two days. As she thought about further improvements in the future, the past with him started making its way into her thoughts and forming another daydream, which was easy because of the dim light and the silence echoing through the rest of the house. She saw herself on a warm summer night crouched down behind a tree. She heard the playful shouts from her husband of “you can't catch me” as he drew closer and closer to her hiding place. Suddenly in her memories, her husband touched the tree and claimed his safety on “home base”. She heard the defeated voice of a very young Joshua as he stood beside his mother and noticed her out of the corner of his eye. “Hey, mommy! You can't hide behind home base! That's cheating!” She smiled in real life as she saw herself tackle her little boy and tickle him until he begged for mercy. As they rolled around on the ground and laughed hysterically, her husband pulled her up into a locking grip and allowed a fair chance for Joshua to tickle her as well. She stood at the sink and closed her eyes as a tear fell from each and encircled her immense smile. Just then, a very soft, innocent voice rang over the depth of her thoughts with a quiet “mommy?” When she turned to look at Claire, she noticed it was not her that this small child was focused on, but instead she had her attention on the shape she caught her own peripheral vision. In the corner of the kitchen in front of the doorway, a tall dark silhouette stood facing her. She hesitated, then quickly turned and reached for the light only to turn back around to an empty doorway. “What happened to it?” she asked her daughter. "It disappeared, but then was in the hall and ran that way.” Claire pointed in the direction of the bedrooms, which made her mom run to Joshua's again. "I just saw you in the kitchen, what did you want?” She said this accusingly in hopes he would admit that it was him this time. "What are you talking about?” he said in a defensive tone, “I've been sitting here trying to beat this level of my game and almost had it until you had to come in here and screwed me up again!” "So you weren't just in the kitchen?”

Claire lived a simple and normal life, or as normal as the eighties could prove to be. Her mother raised her to the best of her abilities as a gentle, loving parent. She had a father who longed to be with his family, but was kept away by business nearly half of her life. Her little brother was her playmate. But, her older brother,who had morals almost completely opposite hers, was a black sheep in the family. The moment he attempted to end his life, Claire's world suddenly changed. She and her family began to hear and see things that were dreadfully unnerving. When Claire became very ill, her mother decided to hire a ghost hunting organization to seek out various answers. However, the results were revealed, Claire and her family realized they were in over their heads and possibly beyond human comprehension. The days began to worsen in many ways. Claire's condition was not improving, her older brother was becoming more anxious, and the ghostly occurrences were becoming more frequent. Most horrifying of all, the proposed explanation from the paranormal researchers was beginning to make more and more sense as these events began falling into place, right where the family feared they would.
About the Author
By the time she turned twelve, Michelle Distler Tovar became fascinated with the ethereal events that were happening around her, especially in her home. She decided to begin a journal to record her experiences. Sixteen years later, she has taken her accounts and sequentially incorporated them into other scenes from her life. She then coiled them into a fictional setting in order to share her story and entertain others who may be able to relate through their own similar incidents.
