Rick sighted in on the drive where the President's car would stop and he would alight. If the German timetable was correct, he should be arriving in minutes. Rick’s forehead was damp with perspiration, but the makeup did not run. Then he saw the car approaching.
Tightening the sling around his arm and steadying it on the crown of the roof, he waited. The car pulled to a stop and four security men emerged. After scanning the area, the older one motioned to the President to leave the car. As he straightened up after stepping out, Rick squeezed the trigger. There was a soft pop and the President threw up his hands.
Rick slipped the rifle over his shoulders and seized the rope with both hands. In seconds, he was rappelling his way down the side of the apartment building. As his feet touched the ground, he pulled the left strand of rope, untying the knot at the top of the roof. The considerable length of rope floated down to him. Rick rapidly coiled it and set out for the dustbin area across the road where he had left the toolbox.
As he slipped the rifle sling off his shoulders, he saw three uniformed policemen come around the corner of an adjacent building. Then others appeared, entering the buildings closeby. Quickly, he disassembled the rifle and stuffed parts of it into three dustbins, laying the coil of rope on top. He shoved the toolbox into the space behind the dustbins and then shuffled out into the crowd that had come out of the buildings to see what was causing the excitement. The police were running from one group to another, looking hard at the people standing and watching them. Rick affected his shuffle and with head down, slowly moved toward the bus stop. He could see the electric powered vehicle approaching. Paying his fare, he took a seat on the southbound bus, keeping his head down all the way. He would be back at the safe house in a half-hour.
