As a race, we can no longer blame or hold the entire Caucasian race of today, responsible for what their parents and grandparents did to our parents and grandparents because they had absolutely nothing to do with it.
As a race, many of us continue to live in mental bondage because we continue to live in our past. As a result, we continue to contribute to many of our children's downfalls and failures in life. Many of our children's minds have become contaminated and corrupt due to the mentality, thought process and mindset of the parents. Oftentimes, we as parents stand behind and support our children in their wrong doing, misbehavior and lack of discipline even when we know for a fact that our children are in the wrong. By doing this, we basically condone their lack of discipline and misbehavior, so therefore, our children grow up thinking that they don't have to respect anyone or take responsibility for their own actions. The end result is, our children continue to become another statistic.
As a race, many of us must get out of this poverty mentality and realize that speaking proper english, being articulate, getting an education and becoming successful has nothing to do with trying to act white or be white. The reality is, success is not limited to one race but open to all races.
"I'm a Man Who Happens To Be Black" is a book that opens discussion regarding the values and principles embraced by many African-American adults and youth. Mr. Bolden openly states that the rejections of positive mainstream values, such as proper speech, behavior and dress, has derailed many African-Americans efforts to acquire and maintain the economic, educational, personal and social strides other cultures gain through acceptance of mainstream values.
"I'm a Man Who Happens To Be Black" is a book that is destined to change the way many youth and adults, particularly African-Americans, view their ability to become successful. The book assists youth and adults with embracing socially acceptable principles, behaviors and ideas without losing their cultural identity or feeling that they have to betray their race if they choose to model mainstream behaviors. The book also tells youth and adults that it's time to "pull up your saggin' pants", set goals for your future and stop buying into concepts, products and behaviors that have alienated, incarcerated and derailed the success of many African-Americans, particularly males.
